Biography: Tolkien's seafaring and other details

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien - born 1892 in Bloemfontein South Africa.
1895 - brought back to England by his mother Mabel on the SS Guelph arriving at Southampton If you check the timetable below you will see there was a direct rail link from Southampton to Birmingham.

1896 - his father Arthur, still in South Africa, dies
1896 - 1910 the family lives in and around Birmingham.

1904 - Mabel dies leaving JRR and his young brother Hilary in the care of Father Francis Morgan
1910 - JRR wins a scholarship to Oxford University
1915 - he gains First Class Honours, and is commissioned into the Lancashire Fusiliers
1916 - (March) he and Edith Bratt are married
1916 - (June) he sails for the war in France
1916 - (November) he is returned to England with trench fever aboard the HMHS Asturias, arriving at Southampton. Click here to see pictures of  Asturias before and after being torpedoed

1918 - Tolkien is posted to the Humber garrison
1920 - 1924 appointed Reader, then Professor of English Language at Leeds University.

During this time the Tolkiens take family holidays at Filey in Yorkshire.
1925 - elected Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford.
Family resides at Northmoor Road
1945 elected Merton Professor of English
1954 - first 2 volumes of The Lord of the Rings published
1955 - third volume published
1959 - Tolkien retires
1966 - 15th Sept JRR and Edith depart from Southampton on a Mediterranean cruise
1966 - 6th Oct - they return to Southampton
1968 - JRR and Edith move to Poole in Dorset
1971 - Edith dies
1972 - returns to Oxford
1973 - JRR Tolkien dies
